Abstract:
We investigate the differences in cognitive and non-cognitive development between Venezuelan forced migrant children and native Colombian children living in Medellín. Our study involves a unique and comprehensive longitudinal dataset, representative of both migrant and host children aged 5 to 17 years, encompassing about 3,000 individuals. We analyze a broad range of indicators, including cognitive skills, socioemotional and mental health metrics, body measurements (anthropometrics), service access, and prosocial behavior. The findings reveal significant disparities, with forced migrant children exhibiting notable delays in both anthropometrics and cognitive development compared to their Colombian counterparts. However, we find no discernible differences in mental health outcomes between the two groups. The extent of these gaps is significantly influenced by the service access.
