NOVAFRICA Webinar: “Does Exposure to Other Ethnic Regions Promote National Integration? Evidence from Nigeria”

On Wednesday, April 28th, at 02.30 pm, Lisbon time, the NOVAFRICA Center welcomes Oyebola Okunogbe from World Bank to present her work on Does Exposure to Other Ethnic Regions Promote National Integration? Evidence from Nigeria.

Author: Oyebola Okunogbe, World Bank

Abstract: This paper examines how temporary exposure to a different ethnic region affects national integration using original survey data from participants in Africa’s largest national youth service program. Seven years later, participants that were randomly assigned to serve in a state where they are not the ethnic majority have both greater national pride and greater ethnic pride compared to those who served in their ethnic region. Exposed participants are more likely to live outside their ethnic region and are more informed about other regions. At the same time, immersion in a different ethnic region reinforces participants’ favorable attitudes towards their own group but not towards other groups.
