NOVAFRICA Research Spotlight: Countering Islamic Radicalization in Northern Mozambique: Radio Campaigning and Adolescent Sensitization in Religious Schools

On World Peace Day, we reflect on innovative approaches to peace-building, including the role of religion in conflict prevention. NOVAFRICA recent research in Mozambique sheds light on how local religious leaders can help foster peace and reduce violence in the conflict-torn region of Cabo Delgado.
Led by Pedro Vicente, NOVAFRICA Scientific Director and Professor at Nova School of Business and Economics,

the research found that promoting messages of peace from local religious leaders — Muslim and Christian — can help reduce violence and antisocial behavior in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.

This emphasizes the power of local engagement, showing that religious leaders who understand the cultural context are pivotal in creating lasting peace. Their messages of unity demonstrate how religion, often associated with division, can instead be a bridge for reconciliation and harmony.

This work, highlighted by media such as Lusa, also showcases the significance of interfaith cooperation. In Mozambique, Muslim and Christian leaders have united to combat violence, proving that collaboration across faiths can play a crucial role in conflict prevention.

On this World Peace Day, we are reminded that religion can be a powerful force for good, capable of fostering peace not only in Mozambique but across the world. Through local leadership and collaboration, we can build a more peaceful future.
